Creating a Color Palette for Your Home with Red: Using the Color Wheel

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

Red is a bold and energetic color that can add warmth and passion to your home. But how do you incorporate this powerful hue into your design without overwhelming the space? The answer lies in using the color wheel.

The color wheel is a visual representation of the relationships between colors. By using the color wheel, you can easily find complementary and accent colors to pair with red and create a harmonious color palette. To start, choose red as your dominant color. To add balance, look for its complementary color, which is green, on the color wheel. Then, add accent colors that are next to red on the color wheel, such as orange or pink.

Your final color palette might look something like this:

  • Dominant color: Red

  • Complementary color: Green

  • Accent colors: Orange and Pink

When using red in your home design, consider the intensity of the shade. A bright and bold red can be used as an accent wall or in smaller details, while a lighter, softer red can be used for larger surfaces such as furniture or curtains.

While the idea of incorporating a dominant color like red into your home design can be exciting, it's important to recognize that you might not be ready to go all out. If you're feeling hesitant about using a lot of red in your space, consider starting small and gradually incorporating the color. You can add a subtle tinge of red by incorporating red brick or art on the walls, red books on a bookshelf, or even by using a white wall with a slight tint of yellow to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Plants are another great way to add a tinge of green to your space, and fun drapes, curtains, or pillows can introduce a tinge of yellow and pink to your color palette. With so many options to choose from, you can experiment with different combinations until you find the perfect balance for your home design.

By following these guidelines, you can create a color palette that incorporates red in a harmonious and beautiful way. So go ahead and experiment with this vibrant color in your home design!
